Morphology
Root:Fibrous roots.
Stem:The plant height is 20~40 cm, the stems and branches are straight, smooth and multi-branched.
Leaf:Single leaves opposite, lanceolate-elliptical.
Flower:Ermaphrodite flowers, spike-like inflorescence, shaped like a bird's tail, orange, superior ovary, two-chambered ovary,axial placenta.
Seed:Oval in shape, can be spread by wind.
Fruit:Capsule, dorsally split into 2 segments when ripe.

Distributions
National distributions​South Africa, South India, and Sri Lanka.
Current geographical distributionsbe cultivated in tropical regions.

 

Habitat, phenology, pollination, and dispersal
HabitatThey are suitable for cultivation in flower beds, ground ​covers or potted plants.
​Phenology, pollination, and dispersalThis type of plant is strong in nature and has a very long flowering period, it can bloom from late spring to autumn.There are two ways to propagate bird's tail flower : sowing and cutting.The suitable period for sowing is from April to July. The suitable temperature for seed germination is about 21~30°C, and it will germinate after about 15~28 days.

Application​:Its roots contain mucus, which has a water-retaining effect.Also, they have a very long flowering period, and oil-green leaves are eye-catching. 
Interesting thing
The flowers and colors are as outstanding as a flock of firebirds flapping their wings on a green sea.
Besides, in folklore, they are regarded as small spiritual flowers and are used to symbolize perseverance and hope. They are sometimes considered to be "flower seeds scattered by fairies", hence their reputation as lucky flowers.
